In a groundbreaking moment for Afrobeat, Burna Boy and Rema emerged victorious at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards, held on Sunday, November 19, 2023. The awards marked the inaugural recognition of Afrobeat categories, highlighting the genre’s global impact and influence.

Burna Boy secured the coveted title of ‘Top Afrobeats Artiste,’ making history as the first-ever winner of this newly-established category. His triumph came after facing tough competition from industry heavyweights such as Wizkid, Rema, Tems, and Cameroonian sensation Libianca. In his acceptance speech, Burna Boy expressed gratitude, dedicating the award to Africa and every artist emerging from the continent.
