In a recent revealing interview with Sky’s US partner network NBC News, actress Jada Pinkett Smith, 52, disclosed that she has been living separately from her famed husband, Will Smith, since 2016. While the couple remains legally married, they’re currently “figuring out” the dynamics of their partnership.

“[We’re] still trying to understand how to be in partnership and how to present that to the world. The reasons for the fracture in our relationship are many. By 2016, we felt overwhelmed and exhausted with our attempts,” Pinkett Smith confessed. She went on to say that their preconceived notions and expectations of each other added to their marital strain.

Jada revealed to NBC’s Hoda Kotb that while she contemplated divorce, she never acted upon the thought. “I had pledged that there would never be a reason compelling enough for a divorce. We are committed to working through any challenges, and I stand by that promise,” she stated.

The candid conversation also touched upon the 2020 revelation of Pinkett Smith’s affair with singer August Alsina, an aspect of her past that she openly acknowledged.

Married since 1997, the couple shares two children, Jaden, 25, and Willow, 22. Will also has a 30-year-old son, Trey, from a previous relationship.

Expanding on their relationship in an interview with People Magazine, Pinkett Smith expressed, “We’ve embarked on intensive joint work. Our profound love for each other is unwavering, and we are determined to discover its future manifestation.” She also lauded her children, terming them “little gurus” and credited them for teaching her profound self-acceptance.

However, the interview wasn’t without its surprises. Referring to the shocking incident at the 2022 Oscars where Will Smith slapped Chris Rock after a joke about her bald look, Pinkett Smith initially believed it was staged. “My first impression was, ‘this is a skit.’ The reality of the situation only dawned on me when I saw Will return to his seat, confirming that it wasn’t just a performance,” she concluded.
