New York City witnessed an unprecedented moment in musical history as Grammy-winning DJ Black Coffee, known off-stage as Nkosinathi Maphumulo, became the first South African artist to fill the legendary Madison Square Gardens.
Originating from Umlazi in KwaZulu Natal, Black Coffee’s achievement resounds as a monumental step for South African artists on the global stage. Ahead of this groundbreaking event, an elated Maphumulo shared with his followers, “The dream is becoming a reality. See you Saturday, NYC.”

As news of his accomplishment spread, congratulatory messages flooded social platforms. Fans, friends, and colleagues from the industry were quick to express their admiration and support. Among them was the Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa, who couldn’t contain his pride over Black Coffee’s landmark performance. Kodwa remarked, “From the streets of Umlazi and Mthatha to the world’s most famous music arenas, Nkosinathi, you are an inspiration to both the young and old.”
Kodwa further emphasized Black Coffee’s influence, stating that his headlining act at Madison Square Gardens “shows the endless possibilities of South African musicians.” While expressing regret at not being present, Kodwa reaffirmed the nation’s support, saying, “I join millions of South Africans supporting you on your journey.”

The event also saw a performance by South African duo Major League DJz, further spotlighting the growing influence of South African music on international platforms.

Earlier in April, the Sport, Arts, and Culture Ministry honored Black Coffee among other South African Grammy Award winners for their global achievements. Reflecting on his journey, the DJ had a heartwarming message for his followers, emphasizing that dreams, no matter how grand, are achievable.
Black Coffee’s sentiments, particularly after being honoured with an International Achievement Award at the SA Music Awards last year, resonate with many. He said, “Growing up as a kid, this was such a big dream… So I want to say this to everyone who is watching: Anything is possible.”
The DJ’s historic performance, coupled with his words, indeed affirms that with determination, talent, and passion, the world’s biggest stages can be graced by anyone, anywhere.
