Omah Lay Reflects on How Growing Up in Nigeria Shaped His Strength and Uniqueness

Nigerian Afrobeat star Omah Lay has credited his upbringing in Nigeria for instilling resilience and a distinctive approach to life and music. During a recent interview on the Zach Sang Show, the “Understand” singer opened up about the profound impact his Nigerian childhood has had on his creativity and worldview.

Describing his early years as “beautiful,” Omah Lay highlighted how growing up with limited resources molded his perspective and gave him the strength that now fuels his success. “It was beautiful growing up in Nigeria, where you have less,” he noted. “Now that I have more, I can use my experiences and resources in ways that people who have always had more might not. In my opinion, it makes you very strong and unique.”

In the interview, Omah Lay also shared how his mother’s unwavering support has been a major source of motivation for him. He expressed deep gratitude for her trust and belief in his journey. “My mum is very proud. She knows I love her so much, and her love for me is my fuel,” he said. “I look back at her and see how far we’ve come, and that keeps my energy alive. Her trust in my decisions and in me becoming an awesome human being is what keeps me going.”

Omah Lay’s musical roots run deep, as he revealed that both his father and grandfather had musical influences in their lives. His father, although not a professional, played drums at home, while his grandfather was a percussionist for renowned high-life musicians. “My dad played the drums, not professionally, but around the house. My granddad used to be a percussionist for some legendary high-life singers, and that’s where I think my whole music thing came from,” he said. “Growing up and realizing that your granddad was a percussionist is another validating fact that I was born a musician.”

With his unique blend of Afrobeats and personal storytelling, Omah Lay continues to carve a distinct path in the music industry. His reflections on his upbringing shed light on the powerful connection between his roots and his artistry, offering fans deeper insight into the experiences that shape his sound.
