In a recent conversation with singer Coco Jones, Grammy-nominated Nigerian artist Ayra Starr shared a heartfelt glimpse into her touring life, revealing how cooking traditional Nigerian meals keeps her grounded and connected to home.
While discussing the pressures of her busy career, Ayra Starr explained that making familiar dishes brings her a sense of comfort. “Sometimes I just want to eat my own food,” she said. “I try to stay in serviced apartments with kitchens so I can cook. Even if I’m tired from a show and it’s late—9, 10, or even 11 p.m.—cooking relaxes me.”

The singer added that Nigerian food is more than just nourishment; it’s an emotional anchor. “I also try to eat Nigerian food wherever I am because it keeps me happy,” she shared, humorously expressing her occasional fatigue with Western cuisine. “I don’t want to eat burgers again. Please, no more burgers!”
Aside from cooking, Ayra Starr mentioned other ways she finds balance while on the road, including watching TV shows and staying in touch with loved ones. “One thing I make sure of on tour is to have a show to escape into, even if it’s just for a few minutes on my phone,” she said.
For Ayra Starr, these small rituals provide a sense of normalcy amid the high-energy demands of her career.
