In a groundbreaking announcement, Tanzanian Afropop singer Abigail Chams has been unveiled as the Spotify EQUAL Africa ambassador for the month of December, marking a significant recognition of her talent and contributions to the music industry.

Abigail Chams, known for her multilingual prowess in Swahili, French, and English, is not only a vocal powerhouse but also a multi-instrumentalist, commanding five musical instruments—violin, piano, guitar, flute, and drums. Born into a family deeply rooted in musical heritage, with a grandfather directing an orchestra and a grandmother singing in the church choir, Abigail’s musical journey was destined from the start.

The ‘Nani’ hitmaker gained prominence at a young age by captivating audiences with covers of popular songs on social media. Her transition to original tracks seamlessly blended hip hop melodies, modern pop, and traditional instrumentation, earning her a record deal with Sony Music Entertainment Africa at the age of 19.

Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s sub-Saharan Africa head of music, expressed pride in Abigail joining the EQUAL programme, emphasizing her as a testament to the boundless talent in Africa. The EQUAL Africa initiative aims to empower female artists, offering support, resources, and global exposure through curated playlists.

Reflecting on her journey, Abigail acknowledged the challenges faced as a young woman in a male-dominated music industry. “No force can stop a woman who knows what she wants and stops at nothing to achieve it,” she affirmed.

The Spotify EQUAL Africa programme aligns with Abigail’s commitment to empowering women in music. It provides female artists with on-platform support, resources, and off-platform guidance to elevate their careers globally.

Abigail’s early exposure to diverse African artists like Davido, D’Banj, Tiwa Savage, Sauti Sol, 2Baba, and P-Square greatly influenced her musical style, characterized by lively pop melodies showcasing her impressive vocal range.

Offering advice to aspiring artists, Abigail encourages them to follow their hearts and pursue their dreams relentlessly.
