Young Thug Released Following Guilty Plea in YSL RICO Case

Rapper Young Thug could soon be free after reaching a plea deal in his high-profile YSL RICO case. A judge sentenced him to 15 years of probation and credited him for time already served, making it possible for the artist to avoid further jail time—provided he adheres strictly to probation terms.

Judge Whitaker handed down a sentence totaling 40 years. However, the structure is unique: Young Thug received credit for five years already served, followed by 15 years on probation. A 20-year prison sentence will remain on standby, to be enforced only if he violates his probation.

The arrangement marks the conclusion of Young Thug’s involvement in what has become Georgia’s longest criminal trial, stemming from accusations of criminal street gang activity and violating the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act. In a surprise move on Halloween, the rapper changed his initial not-guilty plea, admitting his role in the YSL gang.

If Young Thug, real name Jeffery Lamar Williams, stays on track during his probation, he could escape serving the 20-year backup sentence. His attorney, Brian Steel, also requested permission for him to continue collaborating with co-defendants, such as his brother Quantavious “Unfoonk” Grier and fellow rapper Sergio “Gunna” Kitchens, allowing him to pursue his music career.

Although prosecutors initially pushed for a 45-year sentence with 25 years behind bars, the judge took a different route, making Young Thug’s release a possibility as long as he successfully completes his probation.

Young Thug’s co-defendants have had varied responses: two, Yak Gotti and Shannon Stillwell, opted to continue fighting their charges, while three others accepted plea deals earlier in the week.

The trial has captured widespread attention, fueled by unusual events like an alleged attempt by a defendant to pass drugs in court and speculation about Young Thug’s attire subtly communicating with his girlfriend, singer Mariah The Scientist. Despite the media buzz, his legal battles are now effectively over with this plea deal, signaling the start of a new chapter for the Atlanta-based artist.
