The Nigerian music scene has been shaken by a public feud between singer Spyro and music executive Ubi Franklin over an alleged $5,000 scam involving superstar Davido’s name.
In a recent appearance on the Echoo Room podcast, Spyro claimed Ubi Franklin deceived him into performing at an event under false pretenses. According to Spyro, Ubi approached him, stating that Davido had invited him to perform at a birthday party and promised a payment of $5,000 for the appearance.
“I called him aside and said, ‘First of all, I don’t charge $5,000.’ My least fee is N20 million,” Spyro recounted. Despite his reservations, Spyro said he performed at the event, only to discover afterward that Davido had no knowledge of the arrangement.
Spyro further explained: “Ubi told me not to approach Davido about the payment. That’s when he admitted Davido wasn’t even involved and confessed to using his name to get me to perform. This is broad daylight scam, bro!”
In response to Spyro’s allegations, Ubi Franklin denied the claims and labeled them as false narratives aimed at tarnishing his reputation. Ubi countered with his own accusations, stating that Spyro owes him N10.5 million as a 10% commission for a car he helped the singer purchase.
“I have never used Davido’s name to gain anything from anyone. Spyro’s claims don’t make sense, especially since he has direct access to Davido. This is just an attempt to create a scandal and start a PR campaign at my expense,” Ubi said.
He went on to clarify the financial dispute, stating, “Spyro owes me 10% of the cost of the car I helped him buy. He promised to pay me after completing the payments, which he finished in December. I also have $5,000 meant for him, so if we offset the amounts, he still owes me N2.5 million.”
The feud has sparked widespread discussion online, with fans and observers divided over who to believe. While some criticized Spyro for bringing the matter to light on a public platform, others questioned Ubi’s credibility, given the gravity of the accusations.
As the situation unfolds, both parties maintain their positions, each claiming to be the aggrieved party. The music industry and fans alike are waiting to see if this dispute will be resolved amicably or escalate further.
This controversy highlights the challenges and complexities in the entertainment industry, where trust and clear communication are essential for maintaining professional relationships. As Spyro and Ubi Franklin continue their public sparring, it serves as a reminder of the need for transparency and accountability in business dealings.
