Global music streaming giant Spotify is unveiling fresh updates to its dedicated Afrobeats site, enhancing the comprehensive tracking of the genre’s global impact. The ‘Afrobeats: Journey of a Billion Streams’ online hub, launched in June, has witnessed the genre’s phenomenal growth, surging by 550% since 2017 and amassing over 13 billion streams on Spotify in 2022.
The new updates come as a testament to Afrobeats’ influential rise and follow the platform’s celebration of the genre surpassing 15.3 billion streams in Lagos, Nigeria, in October. The latest enhancements provide users with insights into the most streamed Afrobeats tracks, albums, and artists in 2023.
According to Spotify, this additional content will complement the existing information on the site, covering the genre’s origins, evolution, fusion of styles, cultural impact, and highlighting influential women in the Afrobeats scene. The platform emphasizes the significant milestones achieved by Afrobeats artists, from Rema’s groundbreaking billion-stream accomplishment with ‘Calm Down’ featuring Selena Gomez to Grammy nominations and wins, as well as headlining shows at iconic venues globally.

The latest updates reveal Davido as the most streamed Afrobeats artist in 2023, with his track ‘Unavailable,’ from the album ‘Timeless,’ claiming the top spot for the most streamed Afrobeats tracks. Rema’s ‘Rave and Roses Ultra’ emerged as the most streamed Afrobeats album in 2023.
Spotify, boasting a community of 574 million users worldwide, including 226 million Spotify Premium subscribers across 180 markets, continues to solidify its position as the world’s most popular audio streaming subscription service.
