Malawi is grappling with the heartbreaking loss of one of its musical legends, Thomas Chibade, affectionately known as “Chenkhumba.” His soulful voice and extraordinary musical talents have indelibly shaped the nation’s music industry. The passing of Chibade at the tender age of 37 has left a profound void in Malawi’s vibrant music scene.
Chibade was a celebrated figure, known for his heartfelt compositions in reggae and Afro-pop genres. His music resonated deeply with Malawi’s younger generation. Fans hailed him as a “fine vocalist” with a “golden voice.” His passing occurred in the capital city, Lilongwe, with the precise cause of death shrouded in uncertainty. However, some local media reports suggest that he succumbed to malaria, a common and preventable disease that continues to afflict communities globally.
Chibade’s musical journey took flight in the early 2000s with the release of his album “Zatukusira,” a Chichewa term loosely translating to “It Has Come Out.” This album featured one of his most iconic tracks, “Mawu anga,” or “My Words.”
“He had a gift for melodies that resonated with people of all ages. He was a true artist who could evoke emotions and memories through his music,” one devoted fan expressed on Facebook.

Chalera added, “Thomas Chibade’s contribution to the music industry and his impact on the lives of many musicians in Malawi will always be remembered.”
The tragic loss of Thomas Chibade closely follows the passing of another beloved musician, Atoht Manje, who died shortly after a performance.
Malaria, a preventable disease transmitted through mosquito-borne parasites, continues to challenge global health. In 2019, the World Health Organization reported nearly 229 million malaria cases, leading to 409,000 deaths, primarily in Africa. Preventing malaria is feasible through measures like insecticide-treated nets, indoor residual spraying, and antimalarial drugs. Effective treatment and diagnosis are available, but accessibility barriers persist due to poverty, conflict, and inadequate healthcare access.
In the wake of Chibade’s untimely departure, fans and fellow musicians have united to offer their condolences and honor his enduring legacy in the Malawian music landscape.
