In a monumental collaboration, Kendrick Lamar’s company, pgLang, is joining forces with Global Citizen to pave the way for an extraordinary touring circuit across the African continent. This groundbreaking endeavor is set to revolutionize the live music scene in Africa, with pgLang pledging to curate the annual “Move Afrika” shows for the next five years, commencing with Kendrick Lamar’s headline performance in Rwanda on December 6.

This initiative signifies a departure from the conventional practice among major U.S. artists, who often exclude Africa from their global tour itineraries. pgLang and Global Citizen are demonstrating unwavering dedication to establishing an infrastructure that will enable African artists and international performers to tour the continent with the same ease and frequency as they do in North America, Europe, and other regions.

The upcoming December concert holds immense significance for Global Citizen, as it represents a pivotal step towards creating a touring infrastructure that can elevate Africa to the same status as other continents where major tours are an established norm. The commitment of pgLang to curate annual “Move Afrika” shows for the next five years underscores the substantial investment in this venture. Furthermore, expansion plans include hosting shows in neighboring African countries by 2025.

Hugh Evans, the co-founder and CEO of Global Citizen, shed light on the origin of “Move Afrika” and the aspirations linked to this ambitious initiative. He underscored Kendrick Lamar and pgLang’s pivotal role in this venture. Evans emphasized Global Citizen’s longstanding presence in Africa, dating back to notable events such as the celebration of Mandela’s 100th anniversary, featuring artists like Beyonce and Jay-Z in 2018, and more recent engagements in Nigeria and Ghana during the pandemic.

As Evans explained, “What’s always struck us is the absence of a mature touring circuit that connects North, South, East, and West Africa. That’s why we’ve launched Move Afrika, to achieve that within the next five years.” The co-founder articulated that Kendrick Lamar and the pgLang team share a profound passion for making touring across the entire continent as prolific as it is in other parts of the world.

pgLang’s involvement in this ambitious undertaking is comprehensive, encompassing musical curation, artist selection, and creative aspects, including the visual and thematic elements of campaigns and global broadcasts. Evans expressed his unwavering confidence in Kendrick Lamar and pgLang’s role as curators for the initiative, emphasizing their deep commitment and dedication to this significant venture.

Kendrick Lamar’s long-standing connection with Global Citizen, including his performance at a Global Citizen Festival in 2016, has been a driving force behind this collaboration. “When they expressed their commitment to making their first performance on the continent part of Move Afrika, it was a tremendous honor for this initiative,” said Evans. The combined efforts of pgLang, Global Citizen, and Kendrick Lamar promise a vibrant future for the African music scene and the establishment of a dynamic touring circuit that mirrors the energy and vibrancy of other continents across the globe.
