JAY-Z‘s “Beach is Better” has been considered a modern Hip Hop classic, but producer Mike WiLL Made-It says that it was originally meant to be for Big Sean.
The record producer and rapper recently joined the All The Smoke podcast on Saturday, January 20, where he shared insights into the creation of the Magna Carta Holy Grail highlight. During the interview, he unveiled the intriguing backstory of how the track was initially intended for the “Best Mistake” rapper, Big Sean.
In recounting the genesis of “Beach is Better,” Mike WiLL Made-It disclosed that it all began when Big Sean expressed a desire for a beat centered around his a cappella voice note for the song ’10 to 10.’ Several beats were crafted in response to this request, with “Beach is Better” emerging as one of the notable results.
Detailing the collaborative process, he mentioned, “My boy Mars sent me a couple of options, and I thought, ‘Yo, man, this beat is hard.'” Notably, Mike WiLL Made-It infused an ad-lib from Miley Cyrus into the beat before forwarding it to Big Sean, adding an extra layer of creativity to the composition.”

Despite their efforts and the perceived quality of the track, the anticipated response from Big Sean did not materialize as expected. Expressing his disappointment, Mike WiLL Made-It reflected, “We put the extra juice on this, this gotta be the one, but I never heard from Big Sean.” However, fate took an unexpected turn the following week when he found himself in a session with Jay-Z, leading to a significant moment in the trajectory of “Beach is Better.”
