Jay-Z secures his third Emmy triumph for co-directing Rihanna’s captivating Super Bowl halftime spectacle.
Alongside Hamish Hamilton, he claims the Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special accolade at the 2023 Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, triumphing in a category that featured notable nominees like Joel Gallen, Linda Mendoza, Paul Miller, and Glenn Weiss.
Hamilton, a British director with a rich history in events like the Academy Awards and MTV Video Music Awards, has been at the helm of the Super Bowl halftime show since 2010.
This victory adds another milestone to his collaboration with Jay-Z, which spans from the 2003 film “In Concert” to the OTR II Tour with Beyoncé, as well as working with other music luminaries like Eminem, The Weeknd, and Alicia Keys.
Jay-Z, the NFL’s live music entertainment strategist since 2019, showered accolades on Rihanna upon her selection as the headliner for Super Bowl LVII in 2022. Emphasizing her generational talent and humble origins on the island of Barbados, he praised her trajectory as a self-made force in both business and entertainment.
Having previously earned a Sports Emmy for his 2011 Super Bowl XLIV performance of “Run This Town” with Rihanna, Jay-Z continued his Emmy success at last year’s Primetime Creative Arts Emmys for his involvement in Dr. Dre’s star-studded Super Bowl LVI halftime show. The latter earned recognition in multiple categories, including Outstanding Variety Special (Live), Outstanding Music Direction, and Outstanding Production Design for a Variety Special.
Meanwhile, at the 2023 Creative Arts Emmys, Keke Palmer clinched the title of Outstanding Game Show Host for NBC’s “Password,” marking the category’s debut at the Primetime Emmys after transitioning from the Daytime awards. The 75th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards unfolded at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California, over January 6 and 7.
