Renowned Nigerian rapper and activist, Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, has shared insights into how his upbringing has significantly shaped his approach to activism. In a recent interview on the Menisms Podcast, Falz discussed how the influence of legendary musician Fela Kuti and his father, renowned human rights lawyer Femi Falana, played crucial roles in molding his activist spirit.

Falz, who gained widespread recognition for his leadership during the #ENDSARS protest in Lagos in 2020, emphasized that his activism did not start with the protest. Instead, it is deeply rooted in his personal history and the influences he was exposed to from a young age. He explained that the legacy of activism in his family, particularly his father’s long-standing commitment to human rights, has been a constant source of inspiration.

“Apart from Fela records, my dad has been an activist for over 40 years so having someone like that as a father, everywhere I went, someone had a story about what my father did for them. So that level of selflessness played a part in who I became,” Falz shared during the interview.

Growing up in an environment where activism and advocacy were a way of life, Falz found himself naturally drawn to issues of social justice. He mentioned that his father’s dedication to helping others left a lasting impression on him, shaping his worldview and influencing his music and actions.

“That was always at the back of my mind so with everything I was doing with my record, I drew inspiration from everything around me,” he said. Falz also highlighted that his consciousness and awareness of societal issues have always been integral to his identity, long before the events of 2020.

Reflecting on the #ENDSARS movement, Falz noted that 2020 was a pivotal year due to the numerous challenges and injustices facing the country. This period necessitated a shift from merely speaking out to taking concrete actions. “2020 was a time when so much was happening that we needed to take further steps from just talking and walking the walk. Of course, I was going to be in front because I had been talking the talk anyway,” he explained.

Falz’s activism is not merely a response to the current state of affairs but is deeply embedded in his personal and family history. His commitment to fighting for justice and equality is a continuation of the legacy of those who have influenced him. Through his music and public actions, Falz continues to use his platform to advocate for change and inspire others to do the same.
