British rapper Stormzy, known for his trailblazing role in bringing grime music to the mainstream, has been banned from driving for nine months after admitting to using his phone while driving his Rolls-Royce in London.
The 31-year-old artist, born Michael Ebenezer Owuo Jr., pleaded guilty to the offense in writing. The incident occurred in March 2023 and adds to a series of traffic violations on the rapper’s record.
During a hearing at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court, District Judge Andrew Sweet criticized Stormzy’s actions, calling them “dangerous and irresponsible.” The court also heard details of a prior infraction where Stormzy drove a Lamborghini Urus with illegally tinted windows that allowed only 4% light transmission—far below the legal requirement of 70%.
Prosecutor Alice Holloway highlighted the risks posed by Stormzy’s previous driving habits, particularly to “vulnerable road users.” Stormzy, who was not present in court, also has prior speeding offenses on his record.
In addition to the nine-month driving ban, the award-winning rapper was fined £2,010 (approximately $2,500), and penalty points were added to his license.
Stormzy’s defense lawyer, Peter Csemiczky, emphasized that the artist had taken full responsibility for his actions and expressed his regret.
Stormzy, who rose to fame with hits like Know Me From and Vossi Bop, has enjoyed critical acclaim, including Brit Awards for Album of the Year in 2018 and Best Male British Solo Artist in 2020. However, his recent driving ban serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety, even for high-profile individuals.
