South African singer Tyla clinched the Best New Artist award at the 2024 BET Awards on Monday, marking a significant milestone in her burgeoning career. The 22-year-old artist, who skyrocketed to global fame with her debut single “Water,” has been on a winning streak, earning multiple accolades including the inaugural Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance in February 2024. In a competitive category, Tyla emerged victorious over fellow African artists Ayra Starr, Asake, and other nominees including 4Batz, Bossman Dlow, Fridayy, October London, and Sexyy Red. Her emotional acceptance speech resonated with many as she dedicated her win to Africa and its pioneering artists who paved the way.
“This is such a gift to be here. I want to dedicate this one to Africa. I want to dedicate this to all the African superstars before me that didn’t get these opportunities that I’m getting. This is just amazing. Africa to the world, guys,” Tyla said, capturing the essence of her gratitude and pride.
