R&B singer Mario is setting the record straight—again. The “Let Me Love You” crooner is once more defending his name and his respect for Black women after renewed criticism about his relationship choices.
The Grammy-nominated star has been under public scrutiny in recent months following the reveal that his girlfriend, Esmeralda Rios, a Mexican model and actress, is expecting their first child together. What should have been a joyful season for the 38-year-old performer has instead become another round of online discourse about his personal preferences.
The Return of an Old Narrative
For months, commenters have accused Mario of colorism and claimed that he “only likes white girls,” an allegation he’s had to address before. Last year, he brushed off similar remarks with humor, posting, “I like good energy and who loves me the way that’s healthy. Could be Black, White, Mexican, alien… I dated an alien before—it was great.”
But when news of Esmeralda’s pregnancy broke earlier this summer, the conversation reignited in his comment section, with critics dragging his dating history back into the spotlight. This time, Mario wasn’t laughing.
Taking to Instagram, the R&B veteran fired back with passion:
“I’m so tired of the Black women slander in the comments about how I don’t like Black women and how Black women aren’t loved!! If you’re making these comments, I’m convinced YOU have a problem with Black women. Black women are loved and needed!”
His post quickly went viral, sparking a mix of support and debate. While many applauded his defense, others questioned his sincerity, pointing to a pattern they claim reflects a preference for non-Black partners.
