Prominent artist Jason Derulo finds himself embroiled in a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by up-and-coming musician, Emaza Gibson. The suit alleges that Derulo’s motivations for signing Gibson were not purely professional, but tainted with personal, unwarranted sexual intentions.
The details of the lawsuit suggest a disturbing narrative. Gibson, a 25-year-old aspirant in the music industry, disclosed to NBC News about her traumatic experience, stating, “I have anxiety; I’m traumatized.” She expressed how she had been subjected to inhuman working environments, leading her to feel vulnerable and powerless.
Page Six reports that the lawsuit accuses Derulo of making undesired sexual overtures towards Gibson during their collaboration. This professional association can be traced back to 2021 when Derulo had reached out to Gibson for a musical project. Under their contract, Gibson had to release a single with Derulo, churn out a mixtape in four months, and produce a full-length album within half a year.
However, the professional boundaries appeared to blur as Derulo, on multiple occasions, invited Gibson for drinks and dinner at an exclusive members-only lounge. Gibson maintained that she had initially declined these invitations to preserve a professional rapport. Yet, in September 2021, she did join Derulo for a drink and was allegedly given excessive alcohol, despite her vocalizing her discomfort with alcohol. “I told him that I wasn’t a drinker … so it’s like, you know, you’re not listening to that the first time I tell you, and you’re still pushing on me,” shared Gibson, underscoring the mounting pressure she felt.
The narrative takes an even more alarming turn when Gibson recounts a particular incident from November 2021. She describes how Derulo had introduced her to Rosa, a woman believed to be closely associated with the artist.
The event became contentious when Gibson expressed her discomfort regarding Rosa, leading to Derulo’s purported outburst. He allegedly lashed out, saying, “What does she have to do with you? We weren’t going to tell you anything! We don’t have to tell you anything!”
But the accusations don’t end at harassment. Page Six indicates that Gibson is also charging Derulo with intimidation, illegal retaliatory termination, and breach of contract.
This lawsuit brings forward pressing concerns about the dynamics within the music industry, reminding stakeholders of the importance of ethical conduct and professional boundaries. Only time will tell how this lawsuit unfolds and the ramifications it might have on Derulo’s career and reputation.
