Andra Day Sues Former Manager for Alleged $1.6 Million Theft, Claims He Was “Caught Red Handed”

Singer and actress Andra Day has launched a bold legal counterattack against her former manager, accusing him of misappropriating over $1.6 million. In public court filings, Day calls Jeff Evans a “faithless fiduciary” and says she was left financially devastated—facing eviction and unable to tour.

The feud intensified when Evans, along with his companies BassLine Management and Buskin LLC, filed a lawsuit against Day earlier in October. They claim she owes them $850,000 in back payments for alleged breaches in their management contracts.

Within 24 hours, Day responded with her own lawsuit. In her complaint, she details extensive financial misconduct she attributes to Evans—accusing him of withholding money, misdirecting funds intended for tours and housing, and abusing his fiduciary role.

What Day’s Lawsuit Alleges

  • That Evans and his companies misappropriated over $1.6 million, including withholding a $600,000 advance from Warner Bros. Records.
  • That she was left “facing eviction,” unable to pay $300,000+ in credit card debt, and with no funds to support tour expenses.
  • That Evans admitted to withholding at least $575,000 owed to her under prior agreements.
  • That Evans exploited their profit-sharing agreements, which awarded Buskin 40% of net profits and BassLine 20% of gross, in ways she now claims are unjustified.

Day’s legal team wants to dissolve those profit-sharing terms, demand repayment, and secure damages plus legal costs.

Evans’ Side & Denials

In response, Evans and his representatives released statements denying wrongdoing. They allege that Day’s countersuit is retaliatory and insist that their original claims stand. According to their lawyers:

“Ms. Day filed a baseless lawsuit … one day after our clients brought an action … for royalties rightfully due to them. Our clients categorically deny the allegations.”

Evans’ suit claims that from 2012 to 2017, expenses he covered exceeded Day’s earnings, leaving him at a loss. He also contends Day still owes sums from her Netflix film The Deliverance and other projects.

Bigger Stakes: Reputation, Career & Trust

For Day, the lawsuit is more than about money—it’s about trust broken in what should have been a long-term creative partnership. She’s staking her reputation on these allegations, laying out a narrative of betrayal and financial manipulation.

If her claims hold, the fallout could reshape how artists negotiate management deals and protect their financial interests. Studios, prospective collaborators, and management firms will all be watching closely.
