Lizzo has always been known for her infectious energy and uplifting messages of self-love, but during a recent Los Angeles stop of her “Lizzo In Real Life” show, the Grammy-winning artist got deeply personal, revealing that she had once struggled with severe depression.
Speaking candidly to her audience, Lizzo shared that about a year and a half ago, she hit an emotional low so devastating that she questioned whether she wanted to keep going.
“I was in such a dark, deep depression. I was so heartbroken by the world and so deeply hurt that I didn’t want to live anymore.”
The Healing Power of Love
Lizzo then described the moment that changed everything. During a concert, as she made her way through the crowd, a fan reached out to her and said, “Lizzo, I love you.” That small act of kindness became a turning point in her life.
“I reached back, and we hugged, and it felt so damn good. And then it was 10 people, then it was 100 people, then it was 1,000 people, and then it was 10,000 people showering me with love and support… reaching out and allowing me to reach back out and embracing me, and it was f**king life-saving.”
For Lizzo, this moment was a profound realization—true love and connection don’t come from the internet, but from real-life human interactions.
Encouraging Others to Speak Up
Despite her own struggles, Lizzo made it clear that she wasn’t looking for sympathy. Instead, she used her story as a call to action for anyone going through similar pain, urging them to reach out for help.
“I know I sound like a broken record, and I say it all the time, but reach out. I say it because it’s so f**king hard to do when it’s time to do it.”
She encouraged those battling depression or self-doubt to turn to the people who truly care about them.
“If you’re depressed, reach out to someone who will listen to you. If you hate the way you look, reach out to someone who loves you and will tell you you’re f**king beautiful. You may not believe it, but you are special.”
A Reminder That No One Is Alone
Lizzo’s vulnerability is a powerful reminder that even those who seem confident and successful can struggle with mental health. Her message is one of hope, resilience, and the importance of community—a call for everyone to lift each other up, just as her fans lifted her when she needed it most.
