Naomi Osaka, the four-time Grand Slam tennis champion, has revealed that she and rapper Cordae, her longtime partner and the father of her child, have ended their relationship. The 27-year-old athlete shared the news via her Instagram story, saying, “Hi everyone, just wanted to say that Cordae and I are no longer in a relationship. No bad blood at all; he’s a great person and an awesome dad.”
This announcement comes just a year after Osaka revealed she was expecting her first child. The couple welcomed their daughter, Shai, in July 2023.
Osaka and Cordae, who hails from North Carolina, began dating in 2019, the same year she claimed her Australian Open title. While the pair kept their relationship relatively private, Osaka occasionally shared glimpses of their bond on social media, including a playful post in April 2019 captioned, “Can’t take this guy anywhereeeee lol.”
The breakup news follows a challenging start to the year for Osaka, who recently withdrew from the finals of a WTA tournament in Auckland due to an abdominal injury sustained on January 5. Returning to professional tennis has been a journey for Osaka, who has openly discussed the difficulties of balancing her career with motherhood.
“There are moments where it’s really difficult, where I do get down on myself,” Osaka shared last week. “But then I just kind of realized I was pregnant not so long ago and I just really wanted the opportunity to play again.”
The tennis star has also spoken candidly about battling postpartum struggles, admitting that she sometimes felt disconnected from her body after giving birth. Despite these challenges, Osaka has remained active in advocating for mental health and personal well-being, using her podcast series Can’t Wait to Hear from You to connect with and inspire others.
As Osaka navigates life’s transitions, she continues to demonstrate resilience both on and off the court. Fans and supporters hope for her full recovery and look forward to seeing her thrive in her roles as a mother, athlete, and advocate.
